Ecocert enhances rules on packaging for organic and natural cosmetics

Organic and natural certification body Ecocert will be modifying its rules on cosmetics packaging as more information becomes available about the resource consumption of materials.

The France-headquartered certifying body takes into account both formulation and packaging when investigating a product for certification.

However, the rules on packaging are currently being redefined, technical manager for cosmetics affairs Pauline Raffaitin explained.

“We have initiated work with a team of technical experts in order to redefine the criteria that we use to consider packaging for natural and organic cosmetics,” she told CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com.

Currently, the body has two sets of rules for packaging covering primary and secondary packaging.

According to Ecocert, primary packaging must respect the environment, so it has to be recyclable and not consume too much energy in its manufacture. In addition, PVC and expanded polystyrene are not allowed to be used as primary packaging.

Secondary packaging must be either recyclable and non-polluting, or recycled, which in practice includes materials such as paper/card, glass, aluminium, PP, PEHD and PET, the body explained.

Although in some cases the proportion of these materials that are actually recycled is very low in certain regions, the fact that they are in theory recyclable leads to their acceptance.

Global approach

Ecocert and the technical committee’s work to improve the packaging side of the certification will see it take a more comprehensive approach.

“We are trying to take a global approach, looking at the manufacture of the packaging, its function and its end of life,” Raffaitin said.

Getting hold of this information could become significantly easier for the certification body over the next few years, as increasing numbers of products are subjected to a life cycle analysis.

Life cycle analysis investigates the environmental impact of a product from its conception to its disposal. An increasingly popular tool, it will play an important role in the move to display a product’s environmental characteristics on the label.

Discussions surrounding environment labelling are progressing in many areas but in France this is set to become mandatory for manufacturers of certain consumer products under the Grenelle law in January 2011.

Ecocert expects that life cycle analysis data, necessary for this kind of environment labelling, will help refine its packaging standards, Raffaitin explained.

“We are very interested by the life cycle analyses that are going to be put in place in the next few years by cosmetics and packaging manufacturers. We are in the midst of trying to improve our criteria for packaging,” she said.

November is closing in!

We will present them very soon with their product catalog on our website.

For example, we have a fabulous anti-aging brand offering retail and professional SPA cabin product lines that received both an innovation prize and the Victoires de la Beauté in 2008 (the highest Beauty Victory prize in France).

Or a whole line of shampoos, shower gel, body oil, and other key daily cosmetic products that will take you directly to the Provence region with their scents of lavender, chestnut, lemon, thymus and rockrose.

Main organic cosmetic labels

There are several labels for organic cosmetics. Here is a short summary for each one. We have not included the new European label COSMOS or the NATRUE label. A future article will be dedicated to them.

We do not intend to be exhaustive but to give an overview for each one. You can have more information on the respective websites.

ECOCERT

Ecocert is an independent control and certification organisation created in 1991. It is now a reference in terms of organic certification throughout the world. Ecocert is present in more than 80 countries and recently opened an office in the USA in San Francisco. Ecocert has been approved by the USDA as certifying body for the NOP (New Organic Program).

Ecocert certifies food products from organic farming but also other products such as detergents, clothes and of course cosmetics.

There are two certification  levels for organic cosmetics. The following are the minimum thresholds, manufacturers can go beyond. And many do.

  • logo ecocert cosmetique bio Organic label :  minimum 95% of natural ingredients (includes water), minimum 95% of organic certified ingredients on the total plant ingredients and minimum 10% of organic certified ingredients on total ingredients.
  • logo ecocert cosmetique eco Eco label : 50 to 94 % of total ingredients from organic agriculture and 95% of plant ingredients.

For the 2 labels, are forbidden :

  • ingredients from living or dead animals,
  • synthetic ingredients  (color additives, perfumes, antioxidants, synthetic emollients, oils and greases, silicones, any ingredient from the petrochemical industry, …). The referential includes a positive list for the authorized preservatives.
  • GMO,
  • animal testing.

Ecocert and Cosmébio

Some products have both the Ecocert and the Cosmébio label.

Careful not to confuse!

Cosmébio is the label for an association of cosmetic manufacturers, it is not a certifying body. Cosmébio cosmetics must be previously certified by Ecocert or Qualité France before they can join.

This label asks for no further criteria than those of the certifying entities. It is only a communication means for the public.

It is not because a manufacturer which is certified by Ecocert chooses not to join this label that it is less organic than those who do.

Nature et Progrès

The label Nature et Progrès was created in 1971 but is less known than Cosmébio and Ecocert.

Nature et Progrès is an International federation for organic farming and includes consumer associations and producers. Since 1998 it also certifies organic cosmetics.

Nature et Progrès is a very strict label:
Indeed, to obtain the label : :

  • 100% of the plants must be organic certified,
  • plant supplying must respect fair trade principles

Such as for other organic labels, the Nature et Progrès labels forbids :

  • animal ingredients (only  beehive, milk and egg  products are authorized),
  • ingredients from the petrochemical industry (color additives, perfumes…),
  • GMO,
  • animal testing

BDIH

The BDIH (Bundesverband deutscher Industrie- und Handelsunternehmen) is a federation of pharmaceutical,  health and cosmetic industries created in Germany in 1966. It is an independent entity which examines the composition and manufacturing methods of products to be certified.

The BDIH manages a chart, guarantees its supervision and attributes the logo « Cosmétique Naturel Contrôlé » (Natural Controlled Cosmetic) for 15 months.

The positive list is the basis of the label.  It is a list of authorized ingredients : 690 components on the 20 000 existing used for cosmetics.
If a product contains only 1 un-authorized ingredient it cannot obtain the BDIH label.

Main guarantees:

  • cosmetics are elaborated form natural, vegetal raw materials, preferably organic or mineral,
  • tests done on cells and on voluntaries,
  • some preservatives are authorized

Are forbidden

  • ingredients from the petrochemical industry
  • synthetic perfumes and color additives
  • animal raw material (except if animal is alive: honey, lanoline, )
  • irradiation
  • animal testing
  • GMO.

The Genesis of Gaïa Diffusion

The idea to start Gaïa Diffusion came from our personal experience in business. It is of course something we like, but being fond of our environment, we had an ethical problem with selling heavily polluting products, often implying child work and animal testing.

Convinced that it is possible to do trade differently, by respecting Man and the Earth, the idea started sprouting two years ago.

Ecological awareness does not mean stopping international trade, but to reflect on what you export: choose products having a true specificity and as “clean” as possible, thus justifying its export.

We naturally started focusing on organic, natural and handcrafted products. But not only. Indeed, why do fair trade with the world when your neighbor already has excellent products and tries to make a living with them?

It thus became obvious to promote our neighbor’s work and to contribute to local economy. Our region is full of initiatives and quality products and reflects a certain art de vivre (marchés, Côte d’Azur, gastronomy, perfumery with Grasse).

The aim of Gaïa Diffusion is to export key French products from the Provence – Mediterranean region (cosmetics, gastronomy, handcraft, fashion) but only in organic, natural and ethical version.
